Causes and symptoms

The first reason is infectionsthat penetrate into the body, not cope with the attack of viruses against the background of low immunity.
Allergic reactions. Mostly seasonal - in the period of flowering plants. Allergies can occur on dust, pet hair, etc. Everyone should know the source of their allergen and take it in time. antihistamines   drugs.
In some cases pregnancy. Usually in the last terms as a result of hormonal disruption of the body.
Birth defects   nasal sinuses.
Consequences of injury   nose - fracture, displacement and others.

Video - How to get rid of nasal congestion. Medical advice

As we all used to believe, rhinitis is a condition in which abundant mucus is released from the nose, and there is also a strong puffiness of the membranes. However, in some cases, possible swelling of the nasal mucosa without a cold. In this case, there is no discharge from the nasal canals, however, the person continues to experience severe discomfort.

It is not always possible to independently understand the reasons that provoked the so-called. It can be caused by a wide variety of factors. For example, swelling of the mucous membranes appear during viral attacks of the body, neoplasms in the nose, violation of the integrity of the septum. Inflamed polyps or adenoids can also cause congestion.

Causes of nasal congestion

The appearance of puffiness and pigmentation of the mucous tissues of the nose are manifested due to the excessive expansion of the vessels passing through the nasal passages. This reaction may be caused by harmful microorganisms that have penetrated into nasal cavity.

Swelling of the nose without a cold can happen as a result of an allergic reaction to an irritant, or a foreign body entering the nasal passages. A person may experience difficulty in breathing through the nose if dry rhinitis began due to insufficient humidity in the room.

Despite the fact that the symptoms of each of the causes are very similar to each other, there is no single way to get rid of the problem. how folk methods, and medicines can be used only after consulting with a specialist.

Dry air in the room

If nasal congestion without snot bothers you only indoors, then insufficient humidity can be the culprit. In this case, the patient has no discharge from the nasal canals, there is only discomfort during inspiration.

To get rid of constant puffiness, you can use a humidifier installed near the bed. Such devices are made specifically to maintain humidity at the required level.

If you do not have the opportunity to purchase a full-fledged moisturizer, the available tools will come to the rescue. For example, you can from time to time spray water in each of the rooms with a spray bottle. Another simple way to increase the humidity of the air is to hang a few wet towels around the apartment or arrange containers with water.

To make the treatment more effective, do not forget about such rules:

  • to air the room before going to bed;
  • prevent overheating;
  • dress so that sleep is comfortable;
  • do not use heaters at night.

Infectious lesion

Almost all respiratory viral infections provoke nasopharyngeal edema and damage to the mucous membranes at the onset of the disease.

The appearance of such symptoms suggests that the body already has a virus or infection. However, they have not yet begun their active action, if the mucus to fight off harmful microorganisms does not stand out.

Another option - the body's defenses are not enough resources to begin the fight against bacteria.

The reasons for which the immunity goes down can also provoke severe congestion. For example, a cold after hypothermia.

If mucous discharge is absent for 3 days, and the congestion does not go away - the reason for what is happening should be found elsewhere. Contact a specialist who will diagnose and prescribe treatment.

Inflamed adenoids

Adenoiditis refers to a substantial growth and an increase in the size of the tonsils of the pharynx. The main signs of adenoids are blockage of nasal breathing and deterioration of the functionality of the auditory organ. The patient may begin to hear poorly due to severe swelling of the nasal mucous membranes.

Mucous discharge in this pathology is almost always absent. I diagnose inflammation of the tonsils most often in children, however, the pathological process cannot be ruled out at any age. It can develop even against the background of a common cold.

Pick up proper treatment   can only be when the size of the enlarged tonsils is reliably known. If the adenoiditis is at the initial stage, then you can do it by conservative methods - the doctor will prescribe a nasal washout sea waterinhaled.

If the congestion is strong - it is necessary to use products with a vasoconstrictor effect.

When running adenoiditis (3 or 4 stages), surgical intervention is recommended. Its expediency is determined individually for each case. To make a decision about the operation, the doctor must examine the clinical picture of the disease and examine the patient in detail.

Allergic reaction

The nasopharyngeal mucosa may begin to swell due to an allergic reaction of the body to irritating factors. In addition to nasal congestion, the patient may be disturbed by skin pigmentation, frequent sneezing and clear mucous discharge. The latter does not occur so often. The disease may well progress, pretending to be only difficulty breathing and light redness of the mucous membranes.

If you often have to undergo treatment for allergies, do not forget to always carry with you the antiallergic medicines prescribed by the doctor. Have anti-histamine preparations always on hand even if you are over-sensitive to any component of the environment.

Note! If at the right moment you do not have a way to treat an attack, anaphylactic shock may begin. In this case, the possible attack death   due to choking.

Foreign objects in the nose

This cause is widespread among young children. If a swelling in the nose without a cold in a child suddenly occurred, it is most likely that a foreign object has entered the nasal passages. In such cases, you must consult a surgeon. He will examine the child and prescribe adequate treatment.

It is hardly necessary to talk about what danger awaits the victim in such a situation. If a foreign body   move on and overlap airways, high probability of death due to asphyxia.

  - this is the swelling of the nasal mucosa, which is caused by excessive blood flow to the nasal area. Often, edema is accompanied by an inflammatory process.

The mucous membrane of the nose is a barrier that delays the infection in the body, preventing it from penetrating into other organs. Swelling of the mucous membrane indicates that the body is struggling with foreign elements or damage, which caused the reflex reaction. In response to the threat, the permeability of the vessels increases and blood flows to the organ in need of help.

Causes of swelling of the nasal mucosa

Most often, swelling of the nose occurs for one of three reasons:

    allergic reaction of the body;

    respiratory disease;

    mechanical injury to the nasal area.

curvature of the nasal septum;

congenital narrow nasal passages;

getting into the nasal passages of foreign objects;

reaction to drinking alcohol.

Visually, mucosal edema can be determined by looking into the nasal cavity. Mucous, as a rule, has a reddened and swollen appearance. But, since it is not always possible to examine the mucous, swelling can be characterized as a feeling of nasal congestion, difficulty breathing, a feeling of heaviness in this area.

Respiratory or viral diseases, causing swelling of the nose, usually accompanied by copious colorless or greenish secretions, or "breaking" pain in the muscles. As a rule, the nose "lays", it is almost impossible to breathe. Sensitivity to odors disappears, dryness and burning in the nose may appear. Abundant tearing begins, a feeling of “sand in the eyes” appears.

If the swelling is caused by infection in the paranasal sinuses, the patient feels headache   and heaviness in the sinuses - these are the “wings” of the nose and the central part of the forehead. A person quickly gets tired, becomes irritable, and his condition can be characterized as “broken”. In the sinuses pus is formed, part of which goes through the nose in the form of greenish or yellow discharge, often - with blood, accompanied by a specific sharp smell (the patient himself does not feel it), and some accumulates. At the same time it is likely that pus will accumulate quite a lot, and it will break through the shell, spreading to other parts of the face and head.

Allergic swelling of the nose has the following symptoms:

    frequent sneezing;

    instant swelling of the nasal mucosa;

    discharge of colorless liquid;

Sometimes allergic edema   the nose is accompanied by a "sore" throat and itchy face skin. Disappear such symptoms can quickly enough, especially if the allergen is identified and removed. It happens that swelling does not go away for days or even weeks, as in cases of seasonal allergy to flowering plants.

If the mucosal edema is caused by other causes - injuries, tumors, curvature of the septum, then there will most likely not be nasal discharge. But the severity, congestion, discomfort and breathing problems will remain. A characteristic feature of swelling of the nasal mucosa is snoring.

In the event that swelling is caused by trauma - you need to consult a traumatologist to determine the degree of damage to the tissues, nasal septa, and bones. In allergic reactions, an allergist will help, but if the edema is caused by a respiratory disease or its consequences, it is necessary to contact an otolaryngologist. Of particular danger is mucosal edema in infants, whose body is not yet adapted to full breathing through the mouth. In addition, problems with nasal breathing will lead to the fact that the child will refuse to breast.

If a person is sure that edema of the mucous membrane is not dangerous and it is possible to cope with it yourself, numerous medications sold in pharmacies without a prescription, as well as simple procedures that are easy to perform at home, will help to get rid of it.

In case of allergic reactions that cause swelling of the mucous membrane, it is necessary to exclude the possibility of exposure of the allergen to the body and take an antihistamine drug, for example, Suprastin. To facilitate the process of breathing, you can use vasoconstrictor drops. If after a few hours the allergic reaction has not passed, or the swelling has spread to the pharynx area, you should seek medical attention.

With swelling of the nose caused respiratory diseases, it is necessary to influence the site of infection, after which the symptoms disappear. With relatively mild forms of the disease that are not accompanied purulent secretions   from the nose high fever, headaches, will be effectively washing the nasal passages with salt, inhalation, the use of ointments that facilitate breathing, and sprays, constricting blood vessels. Regarding the latter, it is useful to note that they are not a cure, but only relieve symptoms. In addition, the body quickly becomes accustomed to such means, and this may lead to the fact that it will no longer cope with problems on its own, waiting for help. Therefore, it is advisable not to use drops for more than 5 days in a row.

Take antiviral drugs and inside - in the form of powders, tablets. Such tools prevent the reproduction of pathogenic bacteria inside the body, preventing them from infecting other organs and systems. The effectiveness of such funds is clinically proven, but they have many side effects   (including deferred) are contraindicated for pregnant women and children.

When the infection gets into the sinuses, the drugs are used both for local and internal use: antiseptics, antibiotics, immunostimulants. If there is an accumulation of pus in the sinuses, it is necessary to urgently wash them with furatsilin or other antimicrobial agents. Rinsing is best done under the supervision of a physician, because with the careless performance of the procedure, the infection can get into the inner ear.

If there is swelling of the nasal mucosa, but there is no discharge, it is likely that the cause of the swelling is mechanical damage. If the swelling of the nose is due to injury, the first thing to do is to apply a cold to the affected area. This will help to narrow the blood vessels and stop the flow of blood and lymph. Such edemas, as a rule, disappear on their own as tissue is restored. Help regeneration can be with the help of healing ointments, and swelling can be removed vasoconstrictor drops. In severe cases, surgery is required.

In case the cause of edema is hormonal disorders, for example, an excess of female hormones, the doctor, after studying the patient's hormonal background, prescribes drugs that reduce the level of a certain hormone.

Folk remedies

Use of synthetic medicines   often causes damage to the whole body, especially people with intolerance to certain drugs, or people with weakened immunity can suffer. Subject to serious exposure to chemicals. gastrointestinal tract   human, resulting in various disorders, a violation of the natural microflora of the body, reproduction of pathogenic bacteria. Thus, the use of folk remedies   is a more gentle and safe way of treatment for the body, however, in severe cases, most of these methods are powerless.

For the treatment of edema of the nasal mucosa caused viral infections, the following recipes will do:

    Rinsing the airways with a solution sea salt.   To do this, you need to dissolve 1 teaspoon of sea salt in 0.5 liter of warm boiled water, mix thoroughly. The solution must be poured into one nostril and released through the other. Salt thins mucus and contributes to its output. To avoid damage to the mucosa, the procedure is not recommended to perform more often three times a day. At the same time the nose before washing should not be laid. .

    Iodine solution. Flushing the nasal tract with iodine solution is recommended for chronic sinusitis. One or two drops of iodine is added to a glass of warm water and rinsed. Swallow the solution is not recommended.

    Inhalation with essential oil.   Boil water in a wide saucepan, add a few drops to boiling water. essential oil   , or . After that, lean over the pan, covering your head with a towel, inhaling the vapors. Inhalation is carried out several times a day for 15–20 minutes.

    Potato inhalation.   This tool was used by our distant ancestors, its essence is extremely simple. It is necessary to boil in the peel, drain the water, and, covered with a towel or blanket along with the pan, inhale the vapors of potatoes until it cools.

    Onion juice treatment.   rubbed on a grater or crushed in a combine, 3 teaspoons of the resulting mass is poured with a glass of boiled water, add a teaspoon of honey, infuse for about 40 minutes. The resulting infusion is used to rinse the nose or instilled 5 drops in each nostril several times a day. The amount of water in the recipe can be reduced by 2-3 times, increasing the effectiveness of the tool, but at the same time there is a risk of burning the nasal mucosa.

    Aloe juice The lower leaves of the plant must be cut, rinsed, then they are scrolled through a meat grinder, squeezed juice using gauze. This juice is mixed with honey in a 1: 1 ratio and instilled into each nostril 3 drops 4–5 times a day. This mixture will not only relieve swelling and relieve nasal congestion, but also accelerate the healing of the mucous membrane.

    Beets from swelling of the mucous.   Freshly squeezed raw juice is mixed in a 1: 1 ratio with water and instilled 2-3 drops in each nostril. However, this recipe is not suitable for everyone - it can cause mucous membranes. This is especially true of young children. In the latter case, you can use the juice of boiled beets. Also use a mixture of carrot juice (three parts) and beets (one part).

    Honey against edema.   Those who do not have an allergy to bee products, can successfully use honey to relieve swelling and nasal congestion. Natural unheated honey is diluted with water in a ratio of 1: 1 and buried in the nose a few drops during the day. Also, honey is useful to take orally - it has an antimicrobial effect and strengthens the immune system, helping the body fight viruses. On the day an adult can eat 100 grams of honey, children - up to 50 grams.

    Herbal treatments. Remove the swelling will help decoction of such herbs, as well as. Chamomile has anti-inflammatory effect, helps to restore the mucous. Calendula has an antiseptic and calming effect, activates the body's defense systems. To prepare the broth, you need to take a tablespoon of dry mixture, pour boiling water and keep in a water bath for about 20 minutes. Then cool the broth to room temperature and rinse their nose.

If frequent flushing of the nose caused dryness and irritation of the mucous membranes, you can use sea buckthorn oil, which has an anti-inflammatory effect. It is enough to drip 1–2 drops of oil into each nostril, it will help to bring the mucous to a normal state.

In the event that neither rinsing nor treatment with herbs or honey helps, and swelling of the nasal mucosa lasts more than a week, accompanied by unpleasant symptoms or pain, you should consult a doctor and begin treatment with traditional medicine. Lingering or incorrectly chosen treatment may contribute to the development of the chronic form of the disease.

Occur swelling of the nose with a cold can due to colds and other diseases. In this condition, it is important not only to relieve the symptoms, but also to eliminate the cause that provoked them. A doctor can make a correct diagnosis only after examining a patient and studying laboratory tests. Effective therapy will help get rid of the violation in just 7-10 days, but in some cases, longer treatment is required, and even surgery.

  Why appears

There is swelling of the nose due to the development of pathological processes in the body. When pathogenic microorganisms hit the surface of the mucosa, the protection mechanism is triggered. The circulatory system transports antibodies to the site of infection, due to high pressure   vessels and capillaries swell, fluid from them seeps into the extracellular space, which causes swelling.

The mucosa at this time is also trying to protect the body, it begins to actively produce the secret to clear the nasal cavity from alien bodies   and microorganisms. Consequently, . Detachable may be transparent, but if joined bacterial infectionit takes on a yellow or greenish shade and an unpleasant odor.

  Causes of pathology

Various diseases and disorders in the body can cause swelling in the nose. Depending on the cause, choose a drug that removes puffiness, and means to eliminate the root cause. Let us consider in more detail why this condition occurs.

  Troubleshooting methods

Before you need to make sure that the reason for its appearance is identified correctly. Different methods are used in different cases. Let's get acquainted with them in more detail.

  When the viral nature of the violation

You can eliminate the disease itself with antiviral drugs (etiological treatment) or symptoms (symptomatic treatment). Although pharmacies are overwhelmed with anti-viral drugs, it’s best to quickly eliminate them. unpleasant symptoms   and enable the body to cope with the disease itself. The fact is that antivirals   most of them are simply immunomodulators, which only increase the protective barrier, the effect will be only if you take the medicine in the first hours of the disease. You can remove mucosal edema with vasoconstrictor drops   and sprays:

  • Naphthyzinum;
  • "Rinofluimucil";
  • "Galazolin";
  • "Xymelin", etc.

  At bacterial genesis of violation

When the bacterial infection developed, vasoconstrictor agents   can not fully cope with the violation, you need to eliminate the bacteria themselves, which led to the disease. Cleaning the nose from mucus and taking the drops and sprays that remove the swelling should be alternated with the use of bactericidal and bacteriostatic drugs:

  • "Bioparox";
  • Miramistin;
  • "Isofra";
  • "Polydex".

These tools do an excellent job not only with transparent, but also with purulent secretions. They disinfect the mucous membranes, can relieve inflammation, protect against reinfection and help prevent the development of sinusitis.

  When allergic nature of the violation

You can fight allergy with the help of two groups: topical glucocorticosteroids and antihistamines. The first group relates to hormonal drugs. Despite the concerns of consumers, they are completely safe for health. Due to the local effects of drugs are not absorbed into the bloodstream and do not cause dependence, they are included in all modern treatment regimens offered by leading European experts. These include:

  • Fliksonaze;
  • Nasonex;
  • Avmis.

Antihistamines have long been used in medical practice to relieve allergy symptoms. Drugs of the old generation give a sedative effect, which is why they cannot be taken by people working with complex mechanisms, motorists and those who lead an active lifestyle. There are also new drugs that do not cause drowsiness:

  • "Claritin";
  • Zyrtec.

  Let's sum up

Swelling of the nasal mucosa in most cases is accompanied by a runny nose. This condition can cause a variety of disorders and diseases. Depending on the cause, the most effective therapy is chosen.

In some cases, it will be enough to eliminate the symptoms, but sometimes systemic treatment is required. Most often, doctors recommend vasoconstrictor drugsthat remove puffiness immediately after application. However, remember that they can not be used for more than 7 days, it causes negative consequences.

The mucous membranes lining the internal cavity of the nose are very thin and sensitive, and in some of the “lucky ones” even hypersensitive. Therefore, at the slightest irritation begins heavy discharge   mucus, and swollen rapidly. Swollen mucous membranes impede breathing and oxygen access to the lungs. To quickly restore it, you need to know how to remove swelling of the nasal mucosa at home.

  Causes of puffiness

All the causes that can trigger swelling and severe runny nose   (and sometimes without it) can be divided into three large groups:

  1. Exposure to pathogenic microorganisms. These are any pathogenic viruses, bacteria or fungi that infect and irritate the nasal mucous membranes, provoking severe swelling.
  2. Irritation of the mucosa. It can be affected by chemical or physical irritants: house dust, dirt particles, smog, tobacco smoke, strong and unpleasant odors, fumes from varnishes and paints, toxic chemicals.
  3. Exposure to allergens. The peculiarity of allergens is such that for most people they do not cause negative body reactions, and for allergy sufferers they serve as a trigger mechanism for allergy manifestations. Therefore, anything can be an allergen - this is a purely individual concept.

Naturally, if you do not eliminate the cause of the swelling, then any measures taken will give only temporary relief. But, nevertheless, if the edema is strong, then you should try to remove it, and then begin the course of treatment.

  Drug treatment

The easiest way to quickly is to use proven drugs, which should always be in each medicine cabinet: antihistamines or vasoconstrictor nasal drops. If you do not know exactly what reason caused severe swellingthen you can apply both at the same time.

Antihistamines inhibit allergic reactions   and irreplaceable when swelling is one of the manifestations of allergies. In some cases, it is impossible to know this for sure, so you can drink an antihistamine even when folk remedies did not help.

The simplest and effective drugs, which can be bought without a prescription in any pharmacy are: "Cetrin", "Claritin", "Tavegil", "Suprastin", "Diazolin". They begin to actively act within 15-30 minutes after administration, and some drugs have a prolonged effect and can get rid of edema for 12-24 hours.

Vasoconstrictor nasal drops: Naphthyzinum, Otrivin, For Nos, Nazol, Galazolin can also quickly eliminate puffiness due to the fact that they drastically reduce mucus secretion. But their frequent and uncontrolled use can lead to such unpleasant consequences as mucosal bleeding, erosion, and the formation of crusts. Therefore, they should be used as directed by the doctor or one-time, as a means of emergency care.

  Folk remedies

The safest, though not so fast-acting means of controlling the swelling of the nasal mucosa are folk methods, which include: nasal drops, inhalation, washing. Drops work faster and more conveniently, but they are not always at hand. Although you know that you have a tendency to swelling of the mucous membranes, it is better to take care that at least you can quickly prepare the drops.

Nasal instillation is the fastest and most affordable way to remove edema. But there are other equally effective.

  Washing Solutions

Even if the swelling is already gone, you can wash your nose for preventive purposes. For washing such folk remedies are good:

Can be used for rinsing the nose ready pharmaceutical preparations, specially designed for this purpose: "Dolphin", "Aquamaris" or saline saline.

  Other folk ways

If the mucosal edema is caused by a cold or ARVI, steam inhalations, which at the same time moisturize the mucous membranes, warm the nose and relieve inflammation, will perfectly help. Mint, sage, eucalyptus, calendula oils added to water are well suited for inhalation. You can breathe steam soda solution or add validol pill to boiling water.

Effective, but not fast-acting ways to cope with the swelling of the nose are:

  • boiled egg - the nose bridge “rolls around” from both sides as long as the egg stays warm;
  • mustard powder - it is filled up for the night in warm socks, after steaming the legs;
  • salt bag - it retains heat for a long time and helps to remove "negative" energy;
  • iodine net - not less effective method   warming and fighting edema, and you can do it on the nose or feet.

In principle, all these methods are good in their own way, and you can choose the most effective for you only by experience.

The main thing to remember is that if the edema does not pass within 2-3 days, despite all the measures taken, or it continues to increase, and there is a strong difficulty in breathing - you should not continue to experiment and you should consult a doctor. Severe edema can completely block the airways and be fatal.
