What is a prolonged runny nose in children and how to cure it? Medicines for the treatment of children's rhinitis

Probably, there is not a single child who has not been bothered by a cold at least once in his life. This is a frequent satellite of many diseases, and you need to deal with it correctly. How? Let's figure it out today.

Causes of rhinitis and its role in the disease

A seven-year-old nasal congestion may be a consequence of a viral or bacterial disease, cold, allergic reaction to dust or household chemicals. Severe runny nose  in seven-year-old children it is expressed in the production of a large amount of mucus, which, in fact, has an extremely positive function - it neutralizes viruses at the entrance to the organism. Thus, a runny nose prevents the penetration of pathogens to internal organs, and for this reason it is unwise to actively suppress it with the help of vasoconstrictor agents. Drying the mucous membrane of the nasal passages, an even more edema occurs as a side effect. The baby begins to breathe through his mouth, and then the chances of getting a more serious disease increase many times over.
Dried mucus in the spout of the crumbs appears due to dry and hot air, which is present in almost every apartment, especially during the heating season. Such an atmosphere on the mucous membranes is an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. Having lost the primary barrier to pathogens, a seven-year-old child increases the risk of getting a viral-bacterial form of the disease, one of the manifestations of which is green snot.
Thus, we will make the first important conclusion - it is not necessary to fight with a cold. There is no cure for it, nor can there be. Snot at viral ailments  play an important role in the process of recovery of the baby, and we often deprive his body of this protection with his own hands.

Disease characteristic

The course of a cold in a child goes through several stages, which are characterized by the following clinical symptoms:

  1. rhinitis begins with irritation of the mucous, which is clinically manifested by sneezing, itchy sensations in the nasopharynx. Due to the strong immunity, the progression of the beginning cold can be prevented and the appearance of mucous secretions can be avoided altogether;
  2. rhinitis in a 7 year old child in the second stage is manifested by severe rhinorrhea. From the nose constantly running clear mucus. Snot stream usually flow when allergic, viral or catarrhal origin of the disease;
  3. in the third stage transparent snot  from a child at the age of 4, they gradually acquire a yellowish tint and become thicker. Usually this stage lasts up to 4-5 days. The total duration of the disease is 10 days.

The reasons

  1. allergic factors (wool, food, drugs, fluff, pollen, dust mites, hygiene products, harsh odors of household chemicals);
  2. frequent hypothermia and colds;
  3. viral infection (rino-, adenoviruses, influenza). Usually, the onset of rhinitis is observed a couple of days after talking with someone viral disease  by man. This often happens with children who have weakened immunity;
  4. bacterial inflammation (streptococcus). Activation of conditionally pathogenic microbes occurs when exacerbation of sinusitis or the progression of infectious rhinitis;
  5. unfavorable living conditions when the air in the children's room is dry or polluted, which irritates the nasal mucosa and provokes hypersecretion.

Clinical symptoms

A runny nose in children of three years may have the following clinical symptoms:

  • hyperthermia;
  • pain in the paranasal zone;
  • lacrimation;
  • body aches like manifestation infectious rhinitis  in children;

  • dizziness;
  • irritability, capriciousness.

Complications

When a runny nose in a 3-year-old child lasts for more than three weeks, the risk of complications increases. They are caused by the spread of infection and inflammation in the surrounding healthy tissue:

  1. otitis - occurs due to swelling of the mucous auditory tube, violation of its airway function and microbial reproduction in the ear cavity;
  2. sinusitis. Initially, rhinitis flows from the nose, then the volume of discharge gradually decreases, which may indicate both a speedy recovery and the development of sinusitis. The fact that the snot can accumulate in the paranasal cavities due to the lack of outflow. Impaired drainage due to swelling of the nasal mucosa;
  3. tonsillitis, laryngitis. With the progression of the pathological process possible inflammation of the mucous membrane of the larynx, tonsils. In addition, the development of diseases predisposes the inhalation of a child through the mouth of cold, uncleaned air;
  4. hypotrophy (more typical for infants).

Preservation of infectious snot in children for more than four weeks is fraught with the development of meningitis.

Nasal discharge is the most frequent condition that is treated at home, without the help of doctors. Many parents do not consider a cold as a serious illness. In the first days of its occurrence it is. But we must remember that a runny nose (rhinitis) can be a symptom of a serious illness. And improperly treated or prolonged runny nose  can lead to life-threatening complications. At the first symptoms of the disease, it is better to consult a specialist to avoid sad consequences.

Long runny nose - what does it mean?

Runny nose (rhinitis) is inflammatory disease  nasal mucosa. There are several causes of rhinitis, but in any case, a runny nose is a reaction of the body to the introduction of a particular stimulus. This irritation can be infections (viruses, bacteria, fungi), allergens (plant pollen, dust, odors, poplar fluff). A runny nose can be both an independent disease and a symptom of other diseases:

  • childhood viral diseases (measles, rubella, scarlet fever);
  • respiratory viral infections  (adenoviral, rhinovirus);
  • injuries of the nose (when the nasal septum is bent);
  • foreign body in the nose;
  • diseases vegetative system  (vegetative dystonia).

Long called a runny nose, which lasts more than 7 days. Chronic runny nose  - This is a recurrence of the disease more than 4 times a year. Also isolated prolonged congestion  nose when the child’s nasal breathing is disturbed, but there is no nasal discharge. This happens with adenoiditis (inflammation of the adenoids), improper treatment of acute rhinitis and prolonged use of vasoconstrictive drops.

What is not a cold

Why is it a long time?

  1. Acute infectious rhinitis becomes prolonged in the case when the child's immunity is reduced.  The immune reaction is sluggish, inflammatory process  acquires a sluggish nature.
  2. The presence of foci of chronic infection (caries, chronic sinusitis, chronic tonsillitischronic otitis media).
  3. Improper treatment of acute rhinitis, especially vasoconstrictor drops  more than 5 days.
  4. The curvature of the nasal septum in a child.
  5. Allergic rhinitis becomes protracted or chronic with constant contact with the allergen.
  6. Adenoid vegetation, in other words - adenoiditis. This sprawl nasopharyngeal tonsilwhich complicates nasal breathing.
  7. Dry air in the room in which the child is located. The mucous membranes of the nose dry up, causing swelling of the mucous membranes and nasal congestion.

Types of prolonged rhinitis in children

Depending on the cause of occurrence, there are several types:

  1. The physiological rhinitis of infants and children of the first 3-4 months. This is a normal reaction of the mucous membrane of the nasal passages to a changing environment. In the womb, the baby was in the water, and after birth it hit the air. Such a runny nose does not require treatment, passes on its own.
  2. Infectious (viral or bacterial). Any viral runny nose  may be complicated by bacterial attachment of a secondary infection.
  3. Allergic rhinitis. A prolonged course of such a runny nose occurs when the allergen is constantly present in the environment of the child.
  4. Vasomotor rhinitis. This type of prolonged rhinitis is more characteristic of adolescents. Occurs in violation of blood supply in the nose due to vasospasm. This condition happens when there is a sharp change in air temperature (when leaving a warm room in the cold) or during an attack of vegetative-vascular dystonia.
  5. Medical rhinitis. This is a runny nose that occurs in children, often using vasoconstrictor nasal sprays or drops. With their prolonged use, atrophy (death) of the nasal mucosa occurs and, as a result, tissue edema and nasal congestion.

Physiotherapy

Physical therapy is allowed to apply to children of any age. If a child's body temperature rises during exacerbation of chronic rhinitis or during prolonged illness, warming physiotherapy procedures are contraindicated.

Today, inhalation is widely used in medicine. drugs  through a nebulizer, UHF-therapy (exposure to ultra-high frequency rays), KUF (treatment with short-wave ultraviolet rays), laser therapy.

  • UHF-therapy is carried out with any of the types of rhinitis, daily for 3-7 days;
  • Laser treatment is carried out in acute rhinitis 2 times a day, the course of treatment is 3-5 days. In chronic rhinitis, the procedure can be carried out once a day, 7-10 days in a row;
  • Nebulizer inhalation. The device crushes the drug solution into fine particles, which are deposited on the mucous membrane, are easily absorbed and have therapeutic effect. Use a solution of decasane, alkaline solutions, lasolvan solution. Drops Tonsilgon have a good anti-inflammatory effect, is contraindicated in children up to 7 years. Procedures with a nebulizer are allowed to be performed 1-2 times a day, the course of treatment is 5-7 days;
  • KUF - the procedure possessing bactericidal action. It has a good therapeutic effect in the common cold of an infectious nature. Appointed for 5-10 days.

Folk remedies

For the treatment of rhinitis in children is widely used traditional medicine:

It is important that the aqueous solution does not get into the nasal passages under pressure! (with a syringe or nose drawing water). In this case, the water through the Eustachian tube enters the ear, causing otitis.

  • Warming compresses.  For warming, you can use dry heat (sand, salt). The bag or tissue envelope is filled with heated salt or sand, overlaid on the area maxillary sinuses  for 5-10 minutes.

It must be remembered that when purulent secretions  and purulent sinusitis warming procedures are strictly prohibited! Heat has a resorptional effect and pus can penetrate beyond the limits of the nasal cavity or sinuses. Before carrying out such procedures, it is necessary to visit a doctor and make sure that the process is not purulent.

Possible complications

If a runny nose is not treated, it can be complicated by diseases that threaten the patient’s life. These include:

  • Sinusitis - inflammation sinuses  the nose. Sinusitis - inflammation of the maxillary sinuses, frontal sinusitis - inflammation frontal sinus, ethmoiditis - inflammation of the ethmoid sinus, sphenoiditis - inflammation of the sphenoid sinus.
